How to Tie the Girth Hitch
The Girth Hitch

Structure: The Girth Hitch is much more familiar than many of us recognize: it is the same knot we use to link a pair of elastic bands. It is known by many names including: strap hitch (ABOK # 1694, p 294), cow hitch, lark's head (and lark's foot), and lanyard hitch.

Uses: The Girth Hitch attaches a sling or a webbing strap loop to your harness or to another sling, strap, or rope. It is also often employed when slings are used to connect anchor points to a static rope in a top-rope set-up.

Pros and Cons It is probably the quickest and easiest knot to learn. However it reduces the strength of a sling more than when a carabiner is used to join two slings.

Disclaimer: Any activity that involves ropes is potentially hazardous. Lives may be at risk - possibly your own. Considerable attention and effort have been made to ensure that these descriptions are accurate. However, many critical factors cannot be controlled, including: the choice of materials; the age, size, and condition of ropes; and the accuracy with which these descriptions have been followed.
